Hello David,
My grief and condolences goes to Skaugum and the royals therein!
Harald and I were the same age with him only 3 months older. Growing up in Vesteraalen, I would tell my friends that Harald and I were almost ‘family’!
After the war ended, the royal family travelled throughout Norway and had parades and my parents took me with them to see such a parade. The red carpet was covering where the royals were to walk . all the royals walked the carpet except one ,Prince(at that time) Olav ,he walked beside the carpet. When young Harald saw what his father did ,he too walked outside!

Reading this article brings back memories of my journeys to the home of my Norwegian wife-to-be in late 1950s/early1960s. Her home was on a small fjord just north of the Sognfjord.
Travel across the North Sea (Newcastle to Bergen) was by Fred Olsen ferry (typically the Black Prince or Jupiter) and usually an 18 hour journey. From Bergen to Sogn was another 8 hour adventure on a small coastal ferry, sometimes an overnight experience stopping off at various small settlements en route to deliver/pickup passengers or goods.
These boats have for many years now been replaced by the express vessels operated by Hurtigruten.
In later years the cross North Sea Fred Olsen ships have been replaced by others, Colourline for example, until now when there is no Newcastle to Bergen sea link.

Even though not in the dead center of Oslo I would also like to add the Henie Onsted Kunstsenter and -a bit further away, but definitely worth it- the Kistefos Museum in Jevnaker. Modern art and both have a wonderful sculpture garden.

I wonder if i can find some information of my great-great-grandfather, Steffen Jørgensen, in the Nordic museum. He left Norway in the end of 1800, and lived around Seattle. He is buried in Lopez Island in 1906.

In reply to Dean Gee. It is a very remote place. Your only realistic options are to fly, or to take the Norwegian coastal ferry (Hurtigruten/Havila) which departs every day. There is also a long-distance bus into Finland, I believe.
